About Asterisk

Asterisk is a complete software PBX and Open Source product. Asterisk provides Voicemail services with Directory, Call Conferencing, Interactive Voice Response and Call Queuing. It supports three-way calling, caller ID services ADSI, SIP and H.323 (as both client and gateway).

Asterisk needs no additional hardware for Voice over IP (VoIP). For interconnection with digital and analog telephony equipment, Asterisk supports for example PCI connected ISDN interface cards (BRI and PRI).

Asterisk can be fully configured with the various configuration files. The most important configuration files are SIP.CONF and EXTENSIONS.CONF that are used to define the SIP devices and extensions of the system.
